MARIA BANG ESPERSEN

In order to find her own artistic expression the Danish artist Maria Bang Espersen had to forget everything that she had learnt while training to become a glassmaker at the glass college in Kosta. She calls her new technique “Stretched and folded hot glass”. This involves shaping the hot metal with her hands (wearing heat-resistant gloves) directly on the blowing iron – a spectacular, intensely physical procedure which is reminiscent of both dance and of making candy.

In her artistic praxis Maria Bang Espersen investigates the physical characteristics of the glass and the effects that arise when air is fusioned into the hot molten glass. Her sculptures are illusory as being both optical and seemingly tactile too. Forms that, at first glance, may not be associated with glass but with softer and more delicate materials like silk fabrics, cellophane wrappings or precisely candy; that surprise when handled, for their weight, sharpness and precision.
